Housing for the homeless
New Beginnings Alternative Home Shelter Program is a collaboration of New Creation Ministries (501c3 tax exempt, est. 1996) and Cheryl Forrest Ministries (est. 2011). We offer Emergency Shelter and affordable housing for Homeless women and children. We strive to advance homeless women from a point of crisis to a position of self-sufficiency in their lives. Our program will provide a Christ centered safe and a supportive haven to displaced homeless women and children.
*Organization Mission
The mission of New Beginnings Alternative Home Shelter is to enhance the well-being of homeless women and children by providing faith-based housing and comprehensive services that lead to self-sufficiency by linking clients with necessary resources and education to empower them to move forward and succeed.
*Current Activity
We collaborate together to provide a Free Food Program which have provided free food to residents and senior centers in Gloucester, Mathews and Middlesex Counties. We started a mentoring program for youth in 2011 to build self-esteem. Each year we offer a Back to School Project which provides free school supplies, Haircuts, food and games. This year we also distributed approximately 28 free clothing vouchers to children for back to school. We also provided free clothing, shoes, furniture and household and personal items to homeless individuals. Currently we are working together to provide our upcoming housing facility for homeless women and children.
*Fund Use
The funds will be used to purchase the property to provide Emergency Shelter and Affordable Housing to homeless women and children on the Middle Peninsula, Nothern Neck and Surrounding Counties. The property will allow us to serve 64 people in need of shelter.
*Program Description
Our program is called New Beginnings Alternative Home Shelter and will be a nonprofit Residential Facility for approximately 64 homeless women and women with children in need of housing.
Our goal is to offer a 90 to 120 day Emergency Shelter by providing temporary housing and services designed to help homeless individuals.
We also offer a Phase II Housing Program which allows the resident to rent a room, with rent based on their income. Phase II Housing is a shared housing program that offers affordable housing to help women in becoming self- sufficient.
The program will provide one-on-one case management and comprehensive services to its residents. Residents will develop a Progress Plan with weekly and monthly goals. Residents will attend classes on, life-skills training , job skills, fitness and nutrition, budgeting and financial management, parenting, domestic violence and mental health counseling, and self-development classes through partnering with area organizations and skilled community volunteers. The program will also provide Emotional and spiritual support services.
New Beginnings Alternative partner with other homeless service providers and social service agencies that offer families the services and support needed to take the necessary steps toward a new beginning.
The children in our home receive Childcare, homework help, tutoring, and recreational activities, participate in group and one on one counseling. During the summer months the children in the residence will participate in Summer Camp or Daycare and fun activities.
*Program Relevancy
Our Program will provide beds, meals, shelter and supportive services desperately needed for the homeless women and children in Gloucester, Mathews, Middlesex, Northern Neck and surrounding areas.
Families with children are now the fastest growing group of the homeless population, they account for about 40% of the people who become homeless each year. 38% of the people already homeless are families with children.
I was approached this year by a homeless woman who had bite marks on her from the animals in the woods where she use to live. We couldn't find a shelter to place her in on this side, so we paid for a hotel room so she could have a bed to sleep in. This article was posted in concern of the lack of shelters in Gloucester, VA. When one thinks of homeless people, it's usually visions of people with addictions problems or the mentally challenged. Well there is a whole new breed of homeless people these days. A very bad economy that is forcing people out of jobs, lower wages while prices continue to rise, getting injured and not being able to work, and illnesses forcing one out of work, these are the many reasons we are seeing a growing population entering into homelessness. Some people do have friends and family to turn to, others are not so lucky. People are forced to live in their cars or live in tents somewhere in the woods.
We have collaborated together to provide free food and resources to those in need since year 2000. We would like to expand our assistance by offering shelter to the needy.
